Lectures from a Disciple, Vol. 2, Removing Anarthas and Becoming Free from Offences

A devotee whose heart is still filled with many anarthas and attachments is known as bhakta-abhasa, or vaisnava-abhasa. He is not really a Vaisnava; he is next to Vaisnava. What are these anarthas? Chanting Hare Krishna simply to gain the respect of others, fault-finding, cheating, attachment to anything that has no relation to Krishna, and envy. If we are maintaining anarthas, we are chanting on the offensive stage, and such chanting will give rise to more anarthas. We'll find ourselves desiring even more respect, or perhaps the inclination to cheat will increase. We should examine ourselves carefully and root out these unwanted desires.

Srila Prabhupada
Lecture on Srimad-Bhagavatam 6.1.7, San Francisco, March 1, 1967

As soon as you take it very seriously, that "I am Krishna’s" - and neither to the society, neither to the community, neither to the country, neither to the international society, or neither anything, but "I am Krishna’s" - if this firm conviction is there, then you are completely pure: tat-paratvena nirmalam [Cc Madhya 19.170]. And in the pure condition, when you engage your senses in the service of the Lord, that is called Krsna conscious service or devotional service.
